A Long Weekend and Lots of Photos

Striatic Looks Lost?On Saturday, I went out to Hawrelak Park for a Flickr meetup. A rather prominent Flickrite, striatic, was ending his Flickr tour across America and Canada here in Edmonton, since he's originally from here and his mother lives here.

It was a lot of fun meeting other Flickr members from the area, chatting, exchanging photo tips, and discussing Flickr, communities, and social networks. We took a walk around Hawrelak and took many many photographs. I uploaded 130 pictures of the event to this photoset.

Clareview, Next Train ClareviewAfter the meetup was over, I walked around the University area, checked out the progress on the South LRT extension, then hopped on the LRT downtown, heading to [info]unicornsmith & [info]ayrsayle's new townhouse. The photos I uploaded from that walk are here.

Stormi BlorgsAt the townhouse, we basically just hung around, and I took a lot of pictures there as well, both on Saturday and on Sunday (I had slept over, which seems traditional now). The pictures I took there, among them some of them best I've ever taken so far, are here.

100B3690I also took a bunch of pictures of [info]ayrsayle's geckos, which you can find in this photoset.

In total, I took 518 photos over the weekend, but only uploaded 211 of them. I'm really glad I bought a large memory stick for my camera. 518 photos only used 336 MB out of a possible 512 MB (not including the extra 32 MB of the camera's built-in memory which can also be used). Whee!

Your pictures are only 0.6 MB each? How big are they in pixels? I hope you're taking them big enough to print.

(I like the gecko.)

Flickr stores them in varying sizes, up to 1600x1200, which is what I set it to because I mainly only want them on Flickr for online viewing; though they are put up under a Creative Commons license, I'm not keen on the idea of someone making high-res prints of them.

I do, however, maintain all of the originals which are 2304x1728.

I just realized where you got that calculation from. The camera does JPEG compression on all the photos, it doesn't have a RAW format option, which is understandable for an entry-level, even if it is desirable.

The JPEG compression is normally not too damaging, but there are times that it screws with the quality of a photo, under some specific circumstances.

If and when I can afford a higher level digital camera, believe me I'll be ensuring that it supports exporting a lossless RAW format.

I'm glad you ask because I can't say enough good things about it. Flickr is an online photo sharing community. It's not just an image hosting site, but more of a social network where you can browse other people's photos, they can browse yours, you can leave comments on their photos, etc.

The actual photo hosting part of it is really great, too. When you upload your photos, you can set a maximum size for them, and Flickr will automatically create multiple sizes of the same image, 75x75, 100x75, 240x180, 500x375, 1024x768, 1600x1200, etc. up to the maximum you specified.

Once your photos are uploaded, you can name them, give them descriptions, and even create "notes", where you can draw areas on the actual photo that pop up some text when you mouse over them (here's an example).

You can organize your photos into "photosets" which are like little albums, plus you can share them with public groups that they relate to (e.g, the Edmonton group).

Lastly, you can also add "tags" to each photo, relating to what's in them. For example, the photo of the gecko in this post is tagged as gecko, lizard, and hand. Other people looking for photos of lizards, geckos, or hands can use those tags to find such photos, including mine.

You can get a free account which lets you upload about 20 MB per calendar month, or pay $25 USD for a Pro account which lets you upload about 2 GB per month (which is a good deal, actually).

Like I said, though, the best thing about it is that it's very social, people are very friendly, and it's great exposure if you want lots of people to see your work.

Whew! I think I'm done fellating it now. Go have a look. If you sign up, add me as a contact. =)

Oh, and they also let you do external linking to any size version of a photo, with no restriction. The only bandwidth limitation is on how much you upload per month.
